Laptop computer overheated and

A LAPTOP computer which was left on top of paper and a pile of clothes overheated and started a house fire.

The computer was not in use but was connected to the mains power when it started the blaze, at a home in School Yard, off Rowton Street, Burton.

Two fire crews from Burton and Swadlincote were called to the scene at about 7pm on Sunday Tiffany Pendants after a neighbour spotted smoke coming from an upstairs bedroom.

It was first thought there was a person trapped inside the house but the homeowner turned up after firefighters arrived and said that was not the case.

Michael Archer, area commander for East Staffordshire fire and rescue, urged people to take care with electrical items. "Fire investigation officers cannot stress enough the importance of turning electrical appliances off when they are not in use, especially when leaving the house unattended," he said.
