Cheddar Football Club has successfully taken the sting out of a record point reduction for unknowingly fielding an ineligible player.

The Cheesemen's appeal to the Somerset County League saw a 45- point reduction turned into a 13-point punishment.

The club is fined a point and Pounds 35 for every game Dean Grubb played for them, after it failed to confirm his transfer from Weymouth Town had gone through. This adds up to Pounds 455 and the club warns it is a message to others to check players' transfers.

Club chairman Steve Bayliss said: "We are grateful to the support we have had and basically had a good rap on the knuckles.

"We have learnt a lesson in naivety and like all clubs we now have to remain squeaky clean."

The initial 45-point punishment saw Cheddar FC's battle to join the Western League in the recent wire Carbon Fiber Bangle season turned into a fight against relegation to the first division of the Somerset County League.

Their appeal found favour at a league hearing as they were willing to play all the games involving Grubb again at the end of the season.

However, league bosses failed to extend the season to allow this and instead reduced the punishment.

Mr Bayliss said: "We have to be happy with the outcome, although we knew we were very likely to be punished.

"At the time we were not given the opportunity to replay the games and we felt that was totally unjustified, even if we had to play those 13 games over a period of three weeks."

Due to the reduction, Cheddar FC finished 8th in the Somerset County League Premier Division.
