City students put up a bad sho

Students from Jaipur performed dismally in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), as only one student has secured one of the top 50 ranks.

Prateek Agarwal of Step by Step School scored highest from the Pink City in the AIEEE. He secured an all-India rank of 48 and bagged the 93th position in IIT-JEE.

Only eight more students from the city have featured in top 200 ranks of AIEEE, including Mehul Kumar, the city topper of IIT-JEE. Mehul secured 76th position in AIEEE and 19th in IIT-JEE.

Priyanshu Agarwal secured an all-India 22 rank.

Among other city students Piyush Agarwal of Maheshwari Public School cleared the exam with 60th rank. Richa Sehgal of St Xavier's School and Vaibhav Khandelwal of MPS are also among top rankers with individual ranks of 81 and 92 in the AIEEE exam. Four more students have appeared in next 100 ranks - Subham Goyal at 103rd position, Monali Jain with 111, Gaurav Tanwar with 165 and Shivang Badaya bagged the 181st position in the AIEEE. Stating that performance of city students in AIEEE was very dismal this year, the director of a city coaching institute, said, "These results are really Clip on charms poor, although these very students, and dozens of others, secured very good positions in the IIT-JEE, 2010 examination."

"About 500 aspirants who were preparing for IIT from Jaipur secured success, but most of these students even did not appear for the AIEEE, through which admissions are made to the 15 national institutes of technology and other private engineering colleges as well," the coaching institute director added requesting anonymity.

He said that the reason for this was that best of the students mostly do not prepare for admission to private engineering colleges with their full strength. "Mushrooming of engineering institutes has deteriorated the quality of education, thus a number of good students go only for the IITs and do not prefer to go to any other college," he opined.

Director of another coaching centre said that once meritorious students secure their positions in IIT-JEE, they start preparing for international Olympiads, instead of preparing for AIEEE.
